Trimester 1Flora- the plants of a particular region, habitat, or geological period
Fauna- the animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period Multicellular- (of an organism or part) having or consisting of many cells. Heterotrophic- requiring organic compounds of carbon and nitrogen for nourishment Autotrophic- of or relating to organisms (as green plants) that can make complex organic nutritive compounds from simple inorganic sources by photosynthesis Opposite (leaf arrangement)- an arrangement of leaves that are paired at a node and borne opposite to each other Alternate (leaf arrangement)-an arrangement in which leaves are single at each node and borne along the stem alternately Coniferous- trees or shrubs bearing cones and evergreen leaves Deciduous- a tree or shrub shedding its leaves annually Pinnate (leaf venation)- one main vein extending from the base to the tip of the leaf and smaller veins branching off the main vein Palmate (leaf venation)- veins radiating outward from the base of the leaf like fingers spread out from the palm of the hand Dichotomous key- a reference tool constructed from a series of highly organized statements arranged into couplets. A series of choices between alternative characters leads progressively to the identification of the species. Metacognition- awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes Intertidal zone- also known as the foreshore and seashore and sometimes referred to as the littoral zone, is the area that is above water at low tide and under water at high tide (in other words, the area between tide marks) New moon- the moon's phase when it is in conjunction with the sun so that its dark side is toward the earth Full moon- the moon with its whole apparent disk illuminated by the sun’s light Waxing- the moon at any time after new moon and before full moon, so called because its illuminated area is increasing Waning- the moon at any time after full moon and before new moon (so called because its illuminated area is decreasing) Scientific name (Binomial Nomenclature)- a formal system of naming species of living things by giving each a name composed of two parts. The first part of the name identifies the genus to which the species belongs; the second part identifies the specie Scientific classification- a method of scientific taxonomy used to group and categorize organisms into groups known as taxa. Taxa- taxonomic categories or groups, such as a kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, or species Primary Dune- first dune located landward of the ocean beaches having an elevation equal to the mean flood level for the area plus six feet Secondary Dune- dunes that form from the subsequent modification of primary dunes Swale- a low or hollow place, esp. a marshy depression between ridges, or the area between primary and secondary dunes Offshore Bar- submerged or partially submerged ridge of sand built up in the water along a shore or beach by the action of waves or currents. Sand- a loose granular substance, typically pale yellowish brown, resulting from the erosion of siliceous and other rocks and forming a major constituent of beaches, riverbeds, the seabed, and deserts. Longshore current- transportation of sediments (clay, silt, sand and shingle) along a coast at an angle to the shoreline, which is dependent on prevailing wind direction, swash and backwash. This process occurs in the littoral zone, and in or close to the surf zone Wave- movement of the ocean's water due to the oscillation of water particles by the frictional drag of wind over the water's surface. Jetty (groin)- a pier or structure of stones, piles, or the like, projecting into the sea or other body of water to protect a harbor, deflect the current, to protect a beach against erosion or to trap shifting sands Adaptation- a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment. |
